Trauma and Abuse
Traumatic experiences of loss, neglect, abuse, and other adverse events in childhood years may continue to have a disruptive impact in your adult years, particularly in the areas of relationships and in managing your emotions. As a child, you may have taken on adult responsibilities. This pattern may have continued into your adult years and affected your current relationships. You may find yourself experiencing intense emotions when reminded of past traumas.
More recent experiences of traumatic events in your life, such as life-threatening illnesses, accidents, or being a victim of violence or sexual assault can have a significant effect on us. In fact, witnessing others experiencing such events or learning that these situations have happened to our loved ones can be traumatic. Your nervous system, your emotional system, and your beliefs respond to these situations in ways that can be confusing, frightening, agitating and may impact your day-to-day functioning.
You may have a history where the trauma has been complex, continuous, and cumulative as a result of systemic practices such as residential schools or foster care. These experiences can lead to intergenerational trauma and a disconnect from self, family, and culture.
Regardless of the type of trauma you have endured, you will require respectful, collaborative, culturally sensitive and responsive engagement. We endeavor to provide you with an approach that is individualized to meet your needs and incorporates the essential experience of relational safety.
There are several effective therapeutic approaches to help you address traumatic experiences including psychoeducation, mindfulness, EMDR, exposure, skill building, self-care and self-compassion, narrative, to name just a few.
