Life Transitions and Change

Each one of us will experience change in our lives.  Even positive change may be experienced as stressful. A transition is, by definition, a shift away from something toward something new and these shifts are unsettling. In some way, they also involve loss. We all tend to hold on to what is familiar.

Many life transitions are predictable, such as going away to school, retirement, or the birth of a baby. Often, however, these life transitions or changes are unpredictable and may add an element of uncertainty and apprehension; this could be difficulty in your marriage, an unexpected medical diagnosis, or a challenging time with a family member. In fact, there are many twists and turns in our lives. When you experience change, it is an unsettled time. A natural apprehension may lead to anxiety or the sense of losing control.

This can be a time when it is helpful to talk with an experienced therapist who will discuss your concerns and work with you as you consider options. A therapist can offer a perspective that is objective while also providing support, understanding, and skilled intervention. Being able to talk through your concerns often leads to greater confidence about next steps. Therapists focus on understanding what is important to you and seek to help you identify and clarify your goals to determine the best path forward.
